Ween - Live at Shepherds Bush Empire

Well what a treat! Ween here in the UK. The mighty Ween, who's latest album I wrote about in the first 'Music To My Ears' played for nearly 2 and a half blissfull hours.

It was hilarious to see Gene Ween stumble on to the stage, perfectly intoxicated, barely able to stand up and then blast into 'Take me away' which he nailed perfectly! Drugs/Drink are not something I promote the use of in the studio when recording, however some artists feel a little more 'relaxed' or can only perform if under the influence. Ween are almost famous for their drug induced sounding songs and it was brought to the stage, live and loud right before our eyes.

The band pulled out a lot of the classic hits which feature on my favourite album of theirs Chocolate and Cheese which put me in a great mood from the start. The worst thing about the night had to be the sound and I don't mean the band, I mean the venue. It felt like there was a huge hole in the middle of the audio field and things such as the snare and vocals were kind of lost. In fact it had to be the worst live sound I had heard in that respect, but I didn't let it ruin the night. Us audiophiles needs to turn off the critical listening sometimes.

My partner in crime for the evening was in fact birthday boy himself Kev Smith, drummer from the Capelilos who are playing tomorrow at Londons Water Rats. So be sure to get yourself along to see them.

I really recommend seeing a band like Ween at least once in your lives.

(sorry for the bad quality pictures - they were taken on a phone and I might have had a whiskey or two)
