In the Studio with Kelli Ali

Beautiful, gentle melodies define the latest material from Kelli Ali and her group. Songs of dark beauty and fairytale imagery filled my head as we set about recording a special acoustic version of her new album Rocking Horse. This time I was back at the helm of the Way Studio in Hackney London, assisting alongside Luke Buttery - who himself has been working with some great artists recently and producing some fantastic results.

On the day we were accompanied by Peter Shoulder (guitar) and Jane South (Flute) to get down the core basis of the tracks ready for strings etc to be recorded later. Peter, a sterling guitarist and Jane (one of those flautists who produces real magic at times) performed amazingly all day working hard to keep to the strict schedule we had set.

Once the guitar and flute was complete we got Kelli's vocals down - which she sang without any problems. Having tried a couple of mics out on Kelli, we opted for the Neuman 269 which pronounced the crisp, clarity she was looking for in the vocal sound, that sat amongst the guitar and flute more sympathetically.

Once again its such a pleasure to work with someone so professional and talented as Kelli that you lose track of time and can become immersed in the moment and the music.

Kelli is playing on Monday at the Source Below in London so be sure to check her out! I might see you there!
