London to Brighton

Brighton holds many fond memories for me having spent much of my time there when I was a student (studying Music Technology) as a means of escape from London for the weekend. It was here I met some good friends, many of whom I am still close to today. Its also the place I met my girlfriend - Helen, someone who I couldn't imagine being without.

The move to Brighton came about as I was just a little sick of London, having lived there for 8 years it kinda grates on you after a while, then again I suppose anywhere would if you have been there that long. London is hugely over-populated too and is full of many broken promises. There are some great points about London but most of them I have forgotten. Brighton is a new way of life and is on the coast which means a lot to me having grown up by one. Im all up for working in London and visiting some of its great sites, but to live.... not right now.

A new job came my way, having only been living there for a month - Course Leader of a brand spanking new Music Production course at Brighton University. I was happy to accept this great offer and I have been working hard to get the course up and running. There is lots to do, including building and designing new music studios which are being done so by Mike Gardener from the legendary Eden Studios . Not to mention the kit to go in the studios which I have to spec and order and have my trusty fleet of technicians instal for me. I have also been drawing up contracts with commercial studios here in Brighton which will act as classrooms, teaching students in a work environment and not in the classroom - something which I think is greatly over looked in similar courses around the UK. Teaching students in recording studios is essential. Recording studios are like cars, they all have similar functions to one another but the buttons are in different places. Different studios have different equipment, including microphones, desks and outboard. Its imperative that students get to listen to the difference between each of this equipment in order to really value its functionality.

Brighton has a great music scene and one that feels slightly less pretentious than that of Londons. I mean, everyone goes out to see Brighton bands and usually enjoys just being there with the music, where as London involves a lot of chin stroking etc etc. This is all my own experience I am talking about so feel free to shoot me down. In fact this post has encouraged me to open up comments on each post from now on, so feel free to get your two pence worth in!
